Sweet Zer0 reached Net Zero in August 2022 and has stayed there ever since. Here's what that means, and how we do it.
What is Net Zero?
A person, company or country is carbon neutral when the carbon dioxide it releases into the atmosphere is balanced by the amount it removes. Overall, no carbon dioxide is added – which is why it's also called net zero carbon.
Net Zero often goes further and covers other greenhouse gases too, such as methane, nitrous oxide and hydrofluorocarbons, which make up about 24% of global emissions.
How we get there
There are two ways to reach Net Zero: cut emissions, and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – either with carbon-capture technology or naturally, by planting trees. We do both:
- Vegan-only products
- 100% compostable packaging, made from recycled materials
- A tree planted with every order, capturing carbon and restoring habitats
That leaves us with a very small carbon footprint to offset.
The bigger picture
Net Zero is central to the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global warming well below 2°C, and ideally below 1.5°C. The UK has written into law a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 78% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels, on the way to Net Zero by 2050 – through better energy efficiency, more renewable electricity and replacing fossil fuels with alternatives such as hydrogen.
